GoCycle FAQs
We've put together this handy FAQ to help answer some of the most common questions we are asked– we hope you find them useful. If you have a question you'd like answered that is not listed on this page, let us know! We have lots of other cycling information on this site also, visit our cycle training, bike maintenance, bike buddy and loan scheme sections. We also offer advice on buying a bike, getting started, cycling to work, cycling with children, leisure rides in and around Leighton Buzzard, Linslade and Heath and Reach and more.
I want to cycle but I don’t know how! |
Don’t worry – You have already made that all important first step by taking a look at our website. GoCycle offer cycle training for all ages and abilities and at reasonable prices too. See our Cycle training section for further information and advice. |
What do I do if something goes wrong with my bike when I am out cycling?
|

GoCycle offer Bike Maintenance courses, which will enable you to deal with basic roadside repairs, getting you back in the saddle in no time. These courses are pitched at 3 levels, from the complete beginner who has never held a bicycle spanner before to those who would like to learn about bottom brackets and headsets.

Will my son/daughter get cycle training at school? |
Simple answer is yes. GoCycle is organising Bikeability cycle training courses at all schools in Leighton Buzzard, Linslade and Heath and Reach.
The programme will offer every Year 4 pupil the opportunity to be trained to Bikeability Level 1, which takes place on the playground. Pupils in Year 6's and above will be offered Bikeability Level 2 or Level 3, where the training takes place on local roads. The priority is to run the training for Year 6's, but there will also be courses offered to Year's 7's, 8s and 9s too as we are aware many children missed out.
Once we pencilled in training dates with schools we will list these on the Cycle Training pages. If there are no dates showing for your son/daughter's school we recommend containing the head of year. Allison, our Schools Officer, will be liaising with them, but a little parental encouragement to finalise dates always helps!
Allison is the person to talk to at the GoCycle Office if you have specific questions about training and for details of the exciting programme of Bike Clubs soon to be introduced at schools. |
It would be good to cycle to work, is there a better route to take rather than the one I currently use by car? |
The answer is very probably yes. GoCycle can help you plan your journey and even provide you with a Bike Buddy to help build your confidence along the way, see our route planning and bike buddy sections. |
Do I need to wear proper cycling clothes and equipment? |

You can wear what you like to bike! It depends how far you’re cycling, of course, but for most local journeys where you’ll only be going a few miles, there’s no need for the lycra look. Here are our tips:
Jeans
If you’re a jeans fan, stretch denim is great – ordinary jeans are OK, but can be a bit stiff to cycle in, especially if they’re new. If you don’t have a chain guard then you might want to roll up your right trouser leg to keep your jeans oil-free or tuck your trouser leg into your sock. Wearing a pair of thermals undeneath is a good tip in colder weather.
Skirts
Don’t let anyone say you can’t cycle in a skirt! If you like wearing long skirts, then a skirt or chain guard is a good idea. Skirt guards fit over your back wheel and stop your clothes getting caught, and chain guards fit over your chain to stop your clothes getting oily or snagged in your chain. Most bike shops will sell chain guards, and they start at around £10.00
Jackets
If you only buy one piece of cycling gear, a good waterproof jacket is a great investment. Goretex is expensive, but waterproof, windproof and breathable, so you’ll be warm without being stuffy in colder weather. If you don’t want to spend too much money, mail order bike shops often have sales on jackets or some high street shops selling well-known brands at discount prices have outdoor gear which may be worth checking out.
