Happy New Year – Let’s make that Resolution!

If you're planning to make 2009 your year to get active and fit, then why not get pedalling and encourage your friends and relatives to join you!  You'll be surprised how enjoyable and easy it is to incorporate cycling into your daily routine.

Unlike the gym it’s free and you don’t necessarily have to find extra time in the day to fit it in.  You might consider cycling to work instead of driving or dropping the children off at school by bike instead of car, or even just using your bike for that short journey you would usually get the car out for!

Why not save money, get fit, lose weight and potentially add years to your life  make 2009 count and join in the fun!

Here are my resolutions related to cycling in 2009:

  1. Ride my bike to every possible destination instead of driving.
  2. Pay more attention to routine bike maintenance.
  3. Go riding more with my husband and Children.
  4. Do a century ride (100 miles) on my birthday (or thereabouts)
  5. Use cycling as a means to help lose and maintain my weight

What are your bike-related resolutions for 2009? Please let me know and we can share stories via our email update, GoCycle website and help and encourage each other. alvina.farrow@leightonlinslade-tc.gov.uk

The Jingle Bells Ride

Our first Wheelie Wednesday was on 10 December and was a real success, 16 cyclists (and a dog named Lucy) braved the elements and sub-zero temperatures to join us in the festive fun, dressing up and enjoying a relaxing bike ride around Leighton Buzzard, followed by warm mince pies from the local bakers.

The intention is to have regular prizes throughout the year and to host an awards evening in December 2009, where many of the photos will be exhibited and cycling in the town celebrated – more information to follow shortly.

Would you be interested in this scheme in any way? Perhaps you fancy cycling about making deliveries, or perhaps you have expertise in co-ordinating such a scheme, or in running a small business? Or perhaps you would be interested in becoming a customer and sending local packages and recorded deliveries in the local area by a more sustainable means? Cycle Training – Schools

The GoCycle team has now delivered National Standards Cycle training to the year 4’s at both Pulford Lower School and St Leonards Lower School up to Level 1 (that is around 60 children).  It was lovely to see so many children enjoying their bikes and learning new skills; we look forward to inviting parents at both schools to a bike ride early in the New Year!

Dr Bike inspected all the bikes prior to training, alterations and adjustments were made as necessary and all children participated on roadworthy bikes.

We have joined forces with “Get Back Into” from Team Beds and Luton www.getbackinto.co.uk and will be delivering our first adult Cycle Training course starting on 27 January 2009.  If you would be interested in taking part on this course, or would like to book a “one to one” session, please contact us on the number above for further information

Donate a bike

Got an unwanted serviceable bike cluttering your garage/shed?

Send us an email and we may be able to refurbish it and find it a new home

We have had a very positive response and received a number of bikes which have now been overhauled and are ready to re-home, on long term free loan, to those wishing to have a go at cycling, who don’t yet have a bike.

What a brilliant response – keep them coming!

Help police retrieve stolen bikes

A bike is stolen every 71 seconds in the UK so how do you get yours back if it is?  Well, if you register it on www.immobilise.com chances are, if the police find your bike, they can return it to you quickly. Immobilise is a database that enables you to record all your bike details, upload photographs and proof of purchase. The database is used by police to return items that have been recovered. You can also mark your bike with a special immobitag  that thieves can’t remove and you can also record details of your mobile phone, TV and other items.

Diary Dates – watch this space!
